Miscellaneous Poems 710
Headnote: "On seeing a destitute person making his way in the world"
Seeing a destitute person still making his way in the world, the poet reflects that since the world goes on as it is, those with nothing also live on with nothing, finding in the poor man's life the way one lives in an impermanent world.
The Ruijū text ends the headnote with "composed on seeing" and writes line 2 slightly differently. Part of line 2 is hard to read in the source as displayed and is here read areba arikeru.
Line 1 means "one way or another," the same opening as the next poem, 711.
Line 2 means "it is as it is, if there is," repeating ari.
Line 3 means "since it is such a world," the same as line 3 of the preceding poem.
Line 4 means "even having nothing, with nothing," paired with line 2.
Line 5 means "one passes through the world," kamo exclamatory.
