Book Three Autumn Poems 179
It is only natural for the poet, on a journey, to spend the night at the strait of Akashi, yet the moon too has lodged in the same water. Seeing the reflected moon as a fellow traveler, he finds amid the loneliness of travel a kinship with the moon.
Like poem 176 in this book, it sings of the moon over a traveler's sleep, sharing the feeling of the moon as a companion on the road. Akashi was famous for its moon and appears also in poems 208 and 216 in this book.
From poem 174 through poem 217 in this book a long sequence of moon poems follows, from the evening moon through the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month to the moon at dawn, singing of the moon in all its aspects and of the heart that gazes on it.
The author, Kinzane, is Fujiwara no Kinzane. A son of Fujiwara no Sanesue, he rose to Provisional Major Counselor and also served as Master of the Crown Prince's Household. He was an active poet in the circle of Emperor Horikawa.
First line, 'ware koso wa', means I am the one, and koso binds with the realis me in what follows.
Second line, 'akashi no seto ni', is the strait of Akashi in Harima, a poetic place famous for its moon.
Third line, 'tabine seme', means I should spend the night as a traveler, me being the realis form of the volitional mu. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'onaji mizu ni mo', means in the same water too, showing that the moon lodges in the same place as the poet.
Final line, 'yadoru tsuki kana', overlays yadoru, to be reflected, with taking lodging on a journey; kana is exclamatory.
