Book Three Autumn Poems 180
Catching tonight's bright moon in the surface of his garden pond, the poet gazes on it to his heart's content as his own. It is a poem of regal generosity, making the unreachable moon his own by reflecting it in the pond of his residence.
'Tonight's moon' appears also in poems 182 and 185 in this book, as poems on the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month follow one another. The fourth line, 'as my heart desires', is the same phrase as the fourth line of poem 199 in this book.
From poem 174 through poem 217 in this book a long sequence of moon poems follows, from the evening moon through the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month to the moon at dawn, singing of the moon in all its aspects and of the heart that gazes on it.
The author, Shirakawa-in, is Emperor Shirakawa, the seventy-second sovereign. The first son of Emperor Go-Sanjō, he continued to rule as a retired emperor after abdicating, and he commanded Minamoto no Toshiyori to compile this anthology.
First line, 'ikemizu ni', means in the water of the garden pond.
Second line, 'koyoi no tsuki o', is tonight's moon, apparently the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month.
Third line, 'utsushi mote', means reflecting and holding it, keeping the moon close by mirroring it in the water.
Fourth line, 'kokoro no mama ni', means as my heart wishes; poem 199 in this book has the same line.
Final line, 'waga mono to miru', means I see it as mine, expressing the joy of possessing the moon of the sky.
