free of any care I gaze
upon the shining moon

Commentary
Book Three Autumn Poems 210

Dwelling at court, 'above the clouds' that never cloud over through the ages, the poet can gaze at the moon free of all care. Overlaying the cloudless court with the cloudless moon, the poem carries praise for the reign.
In calling the court 'above the clouds' it echoes poem 158 in this book.
From poem 174 through poem 217 in this book a long sequence of moon poems follows, from the evening moon through the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month to the moon at dawn, singing of the moon in all its aspects and of the heart that gazes on it.

First line, 'yo to tomo ni', means for all time, showing the court's lasting prosperity.
Second line, 'kumoranu kumo no', means of clouds that do not cloud, a play on kumoru, to cloud over, and kumo, cloud.
Third line, 'ue nareba', together with the second line means since it is above the clouds, kumo no ue meaning the court. Poem 158 in this book uses the same words.
Fourth line, 'omou koto naku', means without any troubled thoughts.
Final line, 'tsuki o miru kana', means I gaze at the moon, with the exclamatory kana.
