Book Three Autumn Poems 211
Sleeping alone on a journey with one sleeve of his robe spread at the foot of a pine, the poet gazes at the moon all night and wonders whether his wife back in the capital is watching it too. The thought of sharing the same moon with one far away conveys both the loneliness of travel and his longing for her.
Like poems 176 and 179 in this book, it sings of the moon over a traveler's sleep, and its thought of an absent person through the same moon echoes poem 182 in this book.
From poem 174 through poem 217 in this book a long sequence of moon poems follows, from the evening moon through the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month to the moon at dawn, singing of the moon in all its aspects and of the heart that gazes on it.
The author, Akisue, is Fujiwara no Akisue. A son of Fujiwara no Takatsune, he was trusted as a close retainer of Emperor Shirakawa because his mother had been the emperor's wet nurse, and he rose to Master of the Office of Palace Repairs. He founded the Rokujō Fujiwara house of poetry.
First line, 'matsu ga ne ni', means at the root of a pine, the bed of one sleeping outdoors on a journey.
Second line, 'koromo katashiki', uses katashiku, to spread one sleeve and sleep alone.
Third line, 'yomosugara', means all night long.
Fourth line, 'nagamuru tsuki o', means the moon I gaze at, lost in thought.
Final line, 'imo miruramu ka', uses imo, an affectionate word for a wife or sweetheart; ramu is present conjecture and ka a questioning final particle.
