Book Three Autumn Poems 230
Having spent the night in a field where maiden flowers bloom, the poet pretends to worry that, because of the flower's woman's name, people will gossip that he stayed with a woman. There is humor in treating the flower's name as a woman's.
Like Archbishop Henjō's poem in the Kokinshū, which says he plucked the maiden flower charmed by its name and begs it not to tell that he has fallen, it links the flower's name to a woman. The author was a monk, and his poem shares the playful spirit of Henjō's.
From poem 230 through poem 233 in this book come poems on the maiden flower, which, likened to a woman, is sung in its dealings with the white dew and the wind.
The author, Ryūgen, was a son of Fujiwara no Michimune, Governor of Wakasa, and a monk holding the rank of ajari. He was one of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequences.
First line, 'ominaeshi', is one of the seven flowers of autumn, likened to a woman for its name. Through poem 233 in this book, poems with ominaeshi in the first or third line follow.
Second line, 'sakeru nobe ni zo', means in the meadow where they bloom, and zo binds with the attributive nuru in the third line.
Third line, 'yadorinuru', means I have lodged. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'hana no na tate ni', uses natate, the spread of a rumor or reputation.
Final line, 'nari ya shinuramu', means might it come to that, the particle ya joining the conjectural ramu. It has the same form as 'ore ya shinuramu' in the next poem, 231.
