Book Six Parting Poems 341
The poet longs for a wizard who could travel to and from a shore beyond the clouds, like a distant island in the sea, and carry letters back and forth. Drawing on the Taoist adept in Bai Juyi's Song of Everlasting Sorrow, who sought out the spirit of the dead Yang Guifei on an island of immortals, the poem wishes for word from someone far away. In the Kiritsubo chapter of The Tale of Genji there is likewise a poem calling this adept a maboroshi and wishing to learn where a lost spirit dwells.
Some manuscripts name the wife of Tomomasa as the author and give the headnote 'Sent when Otsuki no Akimichi, Governor of Ōsumi, went down to his province.' Ōsumi lies far from the capital, so the offshore isle and the shore beyond the clouds would stand for that distant province.
First line, 'okitsushima', means an island out at sea, tsu being an old case particle meaning no. It stands for a far-off land.
Second line, 'kumoi no kishi o', means the shore beyond the clouds, a place as far as the edge of the sky.
Third line, 'yukikaeri', means going back and forth.
Fourth line, 'fumi kayowasamu', means who would carry letters, using the indirect mu.
Final line, 'maboroshi mogana', means if only there were a wizard, using the wishing particle mogana. Maboroshi refers to one with the arts to visit people far away, like the adept of the Song of Everlasting Sorrow.
