Book Six Parting Poems 342
The poet asks the departing traveler not to rot away at the old inlet of Ono on the Sea of Ise but to return to the capital. Pairing furue, an old inlet, with kuchihatsu, to rot away, he wishes that his friend may not remain in a distant land and be forgotten by the world.
Some manuscripts give the headnote 'Composed when people held a farewell banquet as Minamoto no Toshiyori set out, having business in Ise.' It would then be a poem from the farewell feast for Toshiyori, the compiler of this anthology, as he left for Ise.
The author, Moroyori, is Minamoto no Moroyori. A son of the Minister of the Left Minamoto no Toshifusa, he rose to Major Counselor and was one of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequences.
First line, 'ise no umi no', means of the sea of Ise.
Second line, 'ono no furue ni', means at the old inlet of Ono, held to be a place in Ise, furue meaning an old inlet.
Third line, 'kuchihatede', means without rotting away, using the negative conjunctive de. The kana hatete is read with the voicing mark supplied. It is tied to the aged look of the 'old inlet' in the second line.
Fourth line, 'miyako no kata e', means toward the capital, singing of the capital like 'the flower capital' in poem 334 and 'longing for the capital' in poem 347 in this book.
Final line, 'kaere to zo omou', means I wish you would return, zo binding with the attributive omou. Like 'bound to return' in poem 336 and 'come back' in the next poem, 343, it sings of return.
