Omoiyare towade hi o furu samidare no hitori yado moru sode no shizuku o

English Translation
Think of me, I pray:
in the rains of early summer
days pass and you don't come,
alone I keep the leaking house
and these drops upon my sleeve
Meaning
Think of them: the drops upon my sleeve as I keep the house alone, while the early summer rains fall on through the days you do not come, leaking in like my tears.
Commentary
Book Seven Love Poems I 406

The poet asks the beloved to think of the drops falling from her sleeve as she keeps the house alone, while the early summer rains fall on through the days he does not come. With furu meaning both passing days and falling rain, and moru both keeping a house and leaking, the poem lays the long rains over her tears.
Some manuscripts give the headnote 'Composed at the love-letter contest in the reign of Emperor Horikawa.' It would then be a poem from that contest.
The author, Higo of the Kyōgoku Regent's Household, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Sadanari, Governor of Higo, and served in the house of Fujiwara no Morozane, the Kyōgoku Regent. She was one of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequences.

First line, 'omoiyare', means think of it, and the poem breaks after the first line. By inversion it leads on to 'shizuku o' in the final line. It is the same as the first line of poem 357 in this book, and both ask the other to think of tears on the sleeve.
Second line, 'towade hi o furu', is a pivot word in which furu means both furu, days passing, and furu, rain falling, left in kana, with the negative conjunctive de.
Third line, 'samidare no', means of the long rains of the fifth month, a word related to furu in the second line.
Fourth line, 'hitori yado moru', is a pivot word in which moru means both moru, keeping the house, and moru, the rain leaking in, left in kana.
Final line, 'sode no shizuku o', means the drops on my sleeve, laying tears over the drips of the leaking roof. 'Namida no ame' in poem 394 in this book also likens tears to rain.
