Misebaya na kimi shinobine no kusamakura tama nukikakuru tabi no keshiki o

English Translation
How I'd like to show you:
on the grass pillow where I sleep
longing for you,
tears strung like jewels on a cord,
the look of my journey
Meaning
How I wish I could show you my journey: the grass pillow where I sleep longing for you, hung with tears like jewels strung on a cord.
Commentary
Book Seven Love Poems I 405

The poet wishes he could show the beloved how his journey looks: on the grass pillow where he sleeps longing for her, tears fall like jewels strung on a cord. Seeing tears as jewels, the poem conveys a traveler's longing for someone in the capital.
Some manuscripts give the headnote 'On love at a traveler's lodging.' It would then be a poem on that topic.
Poem 387 in this book also uses misebaya and keshiki o to wish to show the beloved a bed wet with tears, forming a pair with this poem.
The author, Tadamichi, is Fujiwara no Tadamichi. A son of the Regent Fujiwara no Tadazane, he served in turn as Regent, Chancellor and Grand Minister, was known as the Hosshōji Lay Priest, and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, 'misebaya na', means how I wish I could show you, the wishing particle baya with the exclamatory na. The poem breaks after the first line, and by inversion it leads on to 'keshiki o' in the final line. Like the fourth line 'misebaya hito ni' of poem 387 in this book, it wishes to show the beloved.
Second line, 'kimi shinobine no', means where I sleep longing for you.
Third line, 'kusamakura', is the traveler's pillow of grass. Like 'kusamakura' in poem 353 and 'kusa no makura' in poem 385 in this book, it sings of sleeping on a journey.
Fourth line, 'tama nukikakuru', means jewels strung on a cord and hung, likening falling tears to jewels. 'Tama chiru toko' in poem 387 in this book also likens tears to jewels.
Final line, 'tabi no keshiki o', means the look of my journey. It closes in the same form as the final line 'yowa no keshiki o' of poem 387 in this book.
