is this the hut of a wife
set aside, forgotten?
For so long now at my eaves
there has come no word of you

Book Eight Love Poems II 449
The poet wonders whether this is what it means to be a forgotten wife, for there has long been no visit from the man. Stringing together words tied to a humble house, a reed-thatched hut, the edge of the eaves and the eaves themselves, through pivot words, the poem conveys the loneliness of waiting for a man who no longer comes.
Poem 436 in this book also uses hisashi and tsuma as pivot words and forms a pair with this poem. Where that poem speaks from the side of one dismissing a passing husband, this poem laments from the side of a forgotten wife, reversing the picture.
First line, 'kayabuki no', means thatched with reeds, leading into koya in the second line.
Second line, 'ko ya wasuraruru', is a pivot word in which koya means both a reed-thatched hut and is this, left in kana. The particle ya is answered by mu in the third line.
Third line, 'tsuma naramu', is a pivot word in which tsuma means both the edge of the eaves and a wife, left in kana. The irrealis of the assertive nari is followed by the attributive of the conjectural mu, closing in answer to ya in the second line. The poem breaks after the third line. Tsuma to koso mire in the final line of poem 436 in this book uses the same pivot word.
Fourth line, 'hisashiku hito no', is a pivot word in which hisashi means both long in time and the eaves, left in kana. Hisashi ni fukeru in the second line of poem 436 in this book uses the same pivot word.
Final line, 'otozure mo senu', means no visit comes, closing with nu, the attributive of the negative zu, and leaving a lingering note.
