Book Eight Love Poems II 450
If his love would show its color as deep as he feels it, the poet says, the beloved would understand it without his saying a word. Through a contrary-to-fact supposition, the poem conveys the frustration of being unable to confess.
Poem 444 in this book sings that the heart, which shows no color, can be held down while tears cannot, and this poem, frustrated that love does not show its color, forms the opposite pair to it.
First line, 'waga koi no', means my love.
Second line, 'omou bakari no', means as deep as I feel it, the particle bakari expressing degree.
Third line, 'iro ni ideba', means if it showed outwardly, a supposition formed by the irrealis with ba.
Fourth line, 'iwade mo hito ni', means even without speaking, to you, using the negative connective de.
Final line, 'miemashi mono o', means it would be seen, the contrary-to-fact mashi followed by mono o, in answer to ideba in the third line.
