Book Eight Love Poems II 467
If a god has truly appeared and been seen, the poet asks that the love she has held in secret be granted. The poem expresses a prayer to a god of manifest power for the fulfilment of a love that cannot be told to anyone.
Poems 479 and 508 in this book also sing of love through gods, such as the god who circles in a single night and the stone god.
First line, 'hito shirezu', means unknown to others. It uses the same words as hito shirenu in the first line of the next poem, 468, and hito shirezu in the first line of poem 486 in this book.
Second line, 'omou kokoro o', means the heart that loves.
Third line, 'kanaenamu', means please grant it, using namu, a particle of wishing addressed to another. The poem breaks after the third line, and by inversion it leads on to the condition in the lower verse.
Fourth line, 'kami arawarete', means a god appearing.
Final line, 'mienu to naraba', means if it is said that he has been seen, the perfective nu followed by to naraba forming a supposition.
