Book Eight Love Poems II 468
The poet holds a love no one knows, and like waves drawn in by the wind along the rocky shore, he longs to confess it by night. Stringing together seaside words, the rocky shore, the wind on the bay, the waves and their drawing near, and punning on ari, to have, and ariso, rocky shore, and on yoru, to draw near and night, the poem expresses the wish to confess a hidden love.
Some manuscripts name Middle Counselor Toshitada as the author and give the headnote 'Composed at the love-letter poetry contest in the time of Emperor Horikawa.' It would then be a poem by Fujiwara no Toshitada at the love-letter contest of Kōwa 4 (1102), in which men sent love poems and court ladies replied. The next poem, 469, is Kii of Princess Yūshi's Household's reply, and the two form an exchange.
First line, 'hito shirenu', means unknown to others. It uses the same words as hito shirezu in the first line of the preceding poem, 467.
Second line, 'omoi ariso no', is a pivot word in which ariso means both there is longing and a rough, rocky shore, left in kana.
Third line, 'urakaze ni', means in the wind along the bay, the upper verse leading into nami no yoru in the fourth line.
Fourth line, 'nami no yoru koso', is a pivot word in which yoru means both the waves drawing near and night, left in kana. The particle koso is answered by kere in the final line.
Final line, 'iwamahoshikere', means I long to say it, closing with mahoshikere, the perfective form of the wishing mahoshi, in answer to koso in the fourth line.
