Naki kage ni kakekeru tachi mo aru mono o saya tsuka no ma ni wasurehatekeru

English Translation
To the dead man's shade
a sword was hung on a tree,
so the story goes,
yet in a moment's hilt and sheath
you have forgotten it all
Meaning
There is the tale of a sword hung up before the spirit of the dead, yet you, in a fleeting moment, have forgotten everything.
Commentary
Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 575

There is a tale of a sword hung before the spirit of the dead to keep a promise, the poet says, yet you, in a mere moment, have forgotten it all. Stringing together words associated with the sword, he reproaches someone who has forgotten a promise and not kept it.
It draws on the story of Jizha of Wu in the Spring and Autumn period of China, who, remembering that the lord of Xu had desired his sword, found on his return from an embassy that the lord had died, and hung the sword on a tree at his grave before leaving. Like the preceding poem, 574, it turns on the sound kake.
The author, Toshiyori, is Minamoto no Toshiyori. A son of the Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu, he compiled this anthology at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa.

First line, 'naki kage ni', means before the spirit of the dead, drawing on the tale of Jizha hanging his sword at the lord of Xu's grave. Kage echoes the sound of kake in the second line.
Second line, 'kakekeru tachi mo', means the sword that was hung, the attributive of keri marking a story heard. Like hikage in the preceding poem, 574, it uses the sound kake.
Third line, 'aru mono o', means though there is, using the concessive mono o.
Fourth line, 'saya tsuka no ma ni', is a double pivot in which saya means both a sword's sheath and so, while tsuka means both a sword's hilt and the moment of tsuka no ma, left in kana. They are related words to tachi, sword, in the second line.
Final line, 'wasurehatekeru', means you have utterly forgotten, closing with lingering feeling on the attributive of keri.
