Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 596
The heart of the one relied on, the poet says, is as harsh as Mount Arachi, true to its name, and the road taken to Koshi is a journey to regret. Having gone down to the land of Koshi trusting in someone, the poet is disappointed by that person's coldness and regrets setting out.
The next poem, 597, also sings of Mount Arachi, and the two appear to form an exchange. Mount Arachi is a famous place in Echizen, on the pass from Ōmi into Echizen.
First line, 'uchitanomu', means relying upon, uchi being a prefix that adjusts the rhythm.
Second line, 'hito no kokoro wa', means the heart of the one relied on.
Third line, 'Arachiyama', is Mount Arachi, a famous place in Echizen, its name echoing arashi, harsh, to express the other's coldness. The poem breaks here.
Fourth line, 'Koshiji kuyashiki', is a pivot in which koshiji means both the road to the land of Koshi and the road I came by, left in kana.
Final line, 'tabi ni mo aru kana', means a journey indeed, closing with the exclamatory kana.
