Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 597
Even the poet's heart, thinking of the other from afar, is pained, imagining the winter scene of Mount Arachi. To the one in the preceding poem, 596, who regretted the journey to Koshi, the reply imagines the severity of snowbound Mount Arachi in winter and shares in that person's hardship.
It answers by taking up Arachiyama in the third line of the preceding poem as Arachi no yama in the fourth line.
First line, 'omoiyaru', means thinking of from afar.
Second line, 'kokoro sae koso', means even my heart, the particle sae adding inclusion and koso answered by kere in the third line.
Third line, 'kurushikere', means is pained, the realis of the adjective answering koso in the second line; the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'Arachi no yama no', means of Mount Arachi, taking up Arachiyama in the third line of the preceding poem, 596.
Final line, 'fuyu no keshiki wa', means its winter scene, closing in inverted form after the third line.
