Book Ten Miscellaneous Poems II 624
Had the grief stayed as it was on that evening, the poet would not have lived on to be asked after by others. Time has passed since the day of deepest sorrow, and thinking of a self that still lives on, the poet answers a message of sympathy.
Poem 613 in this book also answered words of sympathy. This poem uses a counterfactual and a rhetorical question to express mixed feelings at how time has softened grief.
First line, 'kanashisa no', means the sorrow.
Second line, 'sono yūgure no', means of that evening, pointing to the dusk of the day the person was lost.
Third line, 'mama naraba', means if it had stayed so, answering mashi in the final line to form a counterfactual.
Fourth line, 'arihete hito ni', means living on, by others.
Final line, 'towaremashi ya wa', means would I have been asked after, surely not, the counterfactual mashi with ya wa forming a rhetorical question.
