Book Ten Miscellaneous Poems II 625
If you are a god who comes down from heaven, then, O god, dam the River of Heaven and send its water down to the seedbeds, the poet prays. It is said that when he went down to Iyo with Fujiwara no Norikuni, Governor of Iyo, a drought set in, and he offered this poem to the Mishima deity praying for rain; a story remains that rain fell because of it.
Laments have continued in this book up to this point, but with this poem the book turns to poems of prayer to gods and buddhas, and the next poem, 626, also sings of the efficacy of prayer.
The author, Nōin, was a poet whose lay name was Tachibana no Nagayasu and who took the name Nōin on becoming a monk. He traveled the provinces in search of famous places and wrote the Nōin Utamakura. One of his poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'Ama no gawa', means the River of Heaven, seen as the source of rain.
Second line, 'nawashiromizu ni', means as water for the seedbeds, asking for water for the paddies where rice seedlings are raised.
Third line, 'sekikudase', means dam it and send it down, closing with an imperative; the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'amakudarimasu', means who descends from heaven, using the honorific auxiliary masu. It answers ama, heaven, in the first line.
Final line, 'kami naraba kami', means if you are a god, O god, repeating kami in a forceful appeal. It is inverted with the lines before.
