Book Eleven Variant Poems 676
Because the midnight storm has blown the clouds from the great sky, the moonlight shines clear across it. Contrasting the violence of the storm with the clear light that spreads after it, the poem captures the vastness of an autumn night sky.
This poem is found only in a variant manuscript line of the anthology; in the variant order it is placed after 175 in Book Three. Poem 199 in Book Three also sings of a moon shining clear after the midnight storm has cleared the clouds, sharing many of this poem's words.
The author, Tsunenobu, is Minamoto no Tsunenobu, a son of the Minister of Popular Affairs Minamoto no Michikata, who became Major Counselor and Acting Governor-General of Dazaifu. He was the father of Minamoto no Toshiyori, the compiler of this anthology, and was called the Katsura Major Counselor. One of his poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'tsukikage no', means the moonlight.
Second line, 'sumiwataru kana', means how clear it shines everywhere, closing with kana; the poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, 'ama no hara', means the broad plain of heaven, the sky.
Fourth line, 'kumo fukiharau', means sweeping the clouds away, the storm clearing the sky of clouds.
Final line, 'yowa no arashi ni', means by the storm at midnight, inverted with the lines before. It is the same phrase as the second line of 199 in Book Three.
