Book Eleven Variant Poems 677
As the poet gazes, lost in thought, the clouds clear while the night deepens, the sky grows calm, and the moon shines clear. The poem captures the sky clearing with the passing of time and the quiet clarity of the moon.
This poem is found only in a variant manuscript line of the anthology; in the variant order it is placed after 201 in Book Three. Poem 199 in Book Three shares this poem's third line, kumo harete, and final line, sumeru tsuki kana.
First line, 'nagamureba', means as I gaze, the realis followed by ba.
Second line, 'fukeyuku mama ni', means as the night grows late.
Third line, 'kumo harete', means the clouds clearing. It is the same as the third line of 199 in Book Three.
Fourth line, 'sora mo nodoka ni', means the sky too calm, the stillness of a sky cleared of clouds.
Final line, 'sumeru tsuki kana', means the moon shining clear, the attributive of the continuative ri followed by a noun and kana. It is the same as the final line of 199 in Book Three.
