My heart has resolved upon a single course, yet my self still goes against it despite itself; what am I to do with it?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jien
Nani yue ni kono yo o fukaku itou zo to hito no toekashi yasuku kotaemu
I wish someone would ask me, "Why do you loathe this world so deeply?" I would answer easily.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jien
Does the next life I ought to think of exist for me or not? It is precisely because I have none that I can live on in this world.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jien
Then let me leave behind at least the name of one who loathed the world, as the one keepsake of this worthless self.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Saigyō
Mi no usa o omoishirade ya yaminamashi somuku narai no naki yo nariseba
Had this been a world without the custom of turning away from it, would I have come to my end without ever knowing my own sorrow?
What am I to do? If I were still living in the world, I could cast it off and think anew, "Ah, how wretched this world is!"
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Saigyō
Nanigoto ni tomaru kokoro no arikereba sara ni shimo mata yo no itowashiki
Because my heart still clings to something, the world seems all the more hateful to me once again.
From long ago, what has been hardest to part from is this wretched world—though we are hardly lovers longing for each other.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kujō Kanezane
Omoiidete moshimo tazunuru hito mo araba ari to na ii so sadame naki yo ni
If anyone should remember me and come asking, do not tell them I am alive, in this uncertain world.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Gyōson
Kazu naranu mi o nani yue ni uramikemu totemo kakutemo sugoshikeru yo o
Why did I ever resent this worthless self of mine, when one way or another I have lived my way through the world?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Gyōson
Itsuka ware miyama no sato no sabishiki ni aruji to narite hito ni towaremu
When will I become the master of a lonely dwelling in a village deep in the mountains, and have others come to call on me?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jien
For this wretched self of mine, like the late rice of the mountain fields, I keep everything pent up within and resent the world with all my heart.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
Like the brushwood a humble woodsman cuts and stacks each morning—even for so brief a while, how hard it is to go on living in this world!
I have made this worthless self of mine as though it did not exist; for whose sake, then, should I resent the world?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jakuren
Tanomi arite ima yukusue o matsu hito ya suguru tsukihi o nagekazaru ramu
Do those who have something to hope for and are waiting for their future not lament the passing months and days?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Gyōhen
Nagaraete ikeru o ika ni modokamashi ukimi no hodo o yoso ni omowaba
If I were to think of my wretched lot as someone else's, how I would find fault with one who lingers on alive like this!
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Minamoto no Moromitsu
