Ukiyo o ba izuru hi goto ni itoedomo itsuka wa tsuki no iru kata o mimu
Each day as the sun rises I loathe this wretched world, but when will I see the place in the west where the moon goes down?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Hachijoin no Takakura
Nasake arishi mukashi nomi nao shinobarete nagaraemauki yo ni mo furu kana
Longing still only for the old days when there was kindness in the world, I go on living in a world I have no wish to live on in.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Saigyō
Nagaraeba mata kono goro ya shinobaremu ushi to mishi yo zo ima wa koishiki
If I live on, will I come to long for these days too? For the world I once thought so bitter is what I long for now.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kiyosuke
Sue no yo mo kono nasake nomi kawarazu to mishi yume naku wa yoso ni kikamashi
Had I not seen the dream telling me that even in the latter days this grace of poetry alone does not change, I would have let the request pass as no concern of mine.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Saigyō
Yukusue wa ware o mo shinobu hito ya aramu mukashi o omou kokoronarai ni
In the days to come, will there be someone who remembers me too, as it is the way of the heart to long for the past?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Yo no naka o omoitsuranete nagamureba munashiki sora ni kiyuru shirakumo

Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Kururu ma mo matsubeki yo ka wa Adashino no sueba no tsuyu ni arashi tatsu nari
Is this a world in which one can wait even until dusk? At Adashino a storm seems to be rising over the dew on the tips of the leaves.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Princess Shokushi
Tsu no kuni no nagaraubeku mo aranu kana mijikaki ashi no yo ni koso arikere
Unlike the name of Nagara in the land of Tsu, I cannot live on long; this world is as short as the joints of the reeds.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Emperor Kazan
Kaze hayami ogi no ha goto ni oku tsuyu no okure sakidatsu hodo no hakanasa
The wind blows so hard that the dew on each reed leaf scatters, some a little later, some a little sooner—how fleeting is that little span!
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Prince Tomohira
Akikaze ni nabiku asaji no sue goto ni oku shiratsuyu no aware yo no naka
Like the white dew settling on every blade tip of the low reeds bending in the autumn wind—ah, how sad and fleeting is this world!
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Semimaru
Yo no naka wa totemo kakutemo onaji koto miya mo waraya mo hateshi nakereba
In this world, whichever way one lives, it is all the same; neither palace nor straw hut can be dwelt in to the end.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Semimaru
Shirurame ya kyō no ne no hi no himekomatsu oin sue made sakayubeshi to wa
Do you know, little pine drawn up on this Day of the Rat, that you are bound to flourish until the distant end of your growing?

Nasakenaku oru hito tsurashi waga yado no aruji wasurenu ume no tachie o
How bitter I feel toward the one who heartlessly breaks off the tall branch of the plum at my dwelling, the plum that never forgets its master.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Tenman Tenjin (per the left note)
Fudaraku no minami no kishi ni dō tatete ima zo sakaen kita no fujinami
A hall is raised on the southern shore of Fudaraku, and now, surely, the wisteria of the north will flourish.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kasuga Enomoto Deity (per the left note)
Yo ya samuki koromo ya usuki katasogi no yukiai no ma yori shimo ya okuran
Is it that the night is cold, or that my robe is thin? Through the gap where the slant-cut crossbeams meet, is the frost settling in?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Sumiyoshi Deity (per the left note)
Ikabakari toshi wa henedomo suminoe no matsu zo futatabi oikawarinuru
Hardly any years have passed, and yet the pine of Suminoe has already been renewed twice over.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Sumiyoshi Deity (per the left note)
