Akihagi wa kari ni awaji to iereba ka koe o kikite wa hana ni chirinuru
Is it because the autumn bush clover has vowed never to meet the wild geese, that when it hears their cries its blossoms scatter?
Aki saraba imo ni misemu to ueshi hagi tsuyujimo oite chirinikeru ka mo
The bush clover I planted, meaning to show it to my beloved when autumn came, has scattered under the dew and frost.
Akikaze ni yamato e koyuru karigane wa iya tōzakaru kumogakuritsutsu
The wild geese crossing the hills toward Yamato on the autumn wind grow ever more distant, vanishing into the clouds.
