- Shui Wakashu
Natsugoromo tachiwakaru beki koyoi koso hitoe ni oshiki omoi soinure
On this night when you must set out and leave us, as a summer robe is cut, a feeling of pure regret is added to my heart.
Shui Wakashu - Emperor Murakami
Wasuru na yo wakareji ni ouru kuzu no ha no akikaze fukaba ima kaerikomu
Do not forget me. Like the arrowroot leaves growing along the road of parting that turn over in the wind, when the autumn wind blows, I will soon come back.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wakare chō koto wa tare ka wa hajimeken kurushiki mono to shirazu ya ariken
Who was it that first began this thing called parting? Did they not know how painful it would be?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Toki shimo are aki shimo hito no wakarureba itodo tamoto zo tsuyukekarikeru
There are other times, yet it is in autumn of all seasons that you leave, and so my sleeves are wet with dew all the more.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Kimi ga yo o nagatsuki to dani omowazu wa ika ni wakare no kanashikaramashi
If I had not at least thought of your days as long, like the name of the Long Month, how sad this parting would be.
Shui Wakashu - Emperor Murakami
Tsuyu ni dani ateji to omoishi hito shimo zo shigure furu koro tabi ni yukikeru
The very person I had thought never to let even the dew touch has set out on a journey, in the season when cold showers fall.
Shui Wakashu - Mibu no Tadami
Wakareji o hedatsuru kumo no tame ni koso ōgi no kaze o yaramahoshikere
It is for the clouds that will come between us on the road of parting that I would send the breeze of this fan, to blow them away.
Shui Wakashu - Onakatomi no Yoshinobu
Wakarete wa awamu awaji zo sadame naki kono yūgure ya kagiri naru ran
Once we part, whether we will meet again or not is never certain. Will this evening be our last?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wakareji wa koishiki hito no fumi nare ya yarade nomi koso mimaku hoshikere
Is the road of parting a letter from the one I love? I would never send it away, but only wish to keep gazing at it, as I would never let you go.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wakareyuku kyō wa madoinu ōsaka wa kaerikomu hi no na ni koso arikere
I was confused today as we parted, for the name Ōsaka, Meeting Slope, is the name of the day you will come back and we will meet again.
Shui Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Yukusue no inochi mo shiranu wakareji wa kyō ōsaka ya kagiri naru ran
On this road of parting, where we cannot know how long our lives will last, will today's meeting here at Ōsaka be our last?
Shui Wakashu - Onakatomi no Yoshinobu
Oshimu tomo naki mono yue ni shikasuga no watari to kikeba tada naranu kana
Though ours is not a parting I need lament, when I hear you will cross at the ford of Shikasuga, still, after all, my heart is not at ease.
Shui Wakashu - Akazome Emon
Morotomo ni yukanu mikawa no yatsuhashi wa koishi to nomi ya omoiwataran
The Eight Bridges of Mikawa, where I did not go with you—shall I go on crossing them only in thoughts of longing?
Shui Wakashu - Wife of Minamoto no Yoshitane
Wakareji wa wataseru hashi mo naki mono o ika de ka tsune ni koiwataru beki
On the road of parting there is no bridge laid across, so how could I go on longing for you forever, as though crossing over?
Shui Wakashu - Minamoto no Shitagō
Tsukikage wa akazu miru tomo sarashina no yama no fumoto ni nagai su na kimi
Though you may never tire of gazing at the moonlight, do not linger long at the foot of the mountain of Sarashina, my friend.
Shui Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Wakarureba kokoro o nomi zo tsukushigushi sashite au beki hodo o shiraneba
Now that we part, I can only exhaust my heart in longing, for like this Tsukushi comb set in the hair, I cannot point to a time when we might meet again.
Shui Wakashu - Emperor Murakami
