Oshimu tomo naki mono yue ni shikasuga no watari to kikeba tada naranu kana

English Translation
Though it is not
that I grieve to see you go,
when I hear you'll cross
at Shikasuga, still somehow
my heart cannot be at peace.
Meaning
Though ours is not a parting I need lament, when I hear you will cross at the ford of Shikasuga, still, after all, my heart is not at ease.
Commentary
Book Six Parting Poems 316

Headnote: "When Ōe no Tamemoto was going down to the East, on sending him a fan"
The poet says that though theirs is not a relationship that calls for lamenting a parting, when she hears he will pass the ford of Shikasuga in Mikawa, she cannot after all remain unmoved. Laying on the place name the sense of "after all," she feigns indifference while letting her true regret at the parting show through. According to the headnote, it was attached to a fan she sent to Ōe no Tamemoto when he was going down to the East.
Akazome Emon was a daughter of Akazome no Tokimochi and the wife of Ōe no Masahira. She served Rinshi, wife of Fujiwara no Michinaga, and is said to have written the first part of A Tale of Flowering Fortunes. She is counted among the Thirty-Six Later Immortal Poets.

First line, "oshimu tomo," means "not so much as to lament." The first lines of 322 and 329 in this book also begin with "oshimu," so the heart that regrets parting recurs throughout the book.
Second line, "naki mono yue ni," means "though there is no cause," with "mono yue ni" expressing concession.
Third line, "shikasuga no," plays on the ford of Shikasuga, a famed place in Mikawa, and "shikasuga ni," still, after all.
Fourth line, "watari to kikeba," means "when I hear you will cross the ford." Like 311 of this book, it is a parting poem sent with a fan, so the fan poems answer each other.
Final line, "tada naranu kana," means "my heart is not at ease," with "kana" exclamatory.
