- Sankashu
Nageku tomo shiraba ya hito no onozukara aware to omou koto mo aru beki
However much I grieve, I would like to know whether you might ever, of your own accord, come to feel pity for me.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nani to naku sasuga ni oshiki inochi kana arieba hito ya omoishiru tote
Somehow, all the same, my life is precious to me, for I think that if I live on, you may yet come to understand my feelings.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nani yue ka kyō made mono o omowamashi inochi ni kaete au yo nariseba
Why would I still be brooding today, if ours were a bond in which I could meet you at the cost of my life?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ayametsutsu hito shiru tote mo ikaga sen shinobihatsu beki tamoto naraneba
Even if people wonder and come to know of my love, what can I do? These are not sleeves that can keep it hidden to the end.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Namidagawa fukaku nagaruru mio naraba asaki hitome ni tsutsumazaramashi
If my river of tears ran as deep as a channel, as deep as my own heart, I would not hide it from the shallow eyes of others.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shibashi koso hitome tsutsumi ni sekarekere hate wa namida ya Narutaki no kawa
For a while my tears were held back by the dam of others' eyes, but in the end will they turn into the roaring river of Narutaki?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mono omoeba sode ni nagaruru namidagawa ika naru mio ni ause narinan
This river of tears that flows on my sleeves as I brood over love, by what channel will it find a ford where I may meet you?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Uki ni dani nadonado hito o omoedomo kanawade toshi no tsumorinuru kana
Even in my pain I go on loving you, asking myself why, why, yet with nothing fulfilled the years have piled up so high.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nakanaka ni narenu omoi no mama naraba urami bakari ya mi ni tsumoramashi
Had it stayed a love that never grew intimate, would only resentment, I wonder, have piled up within me?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nani sen ni tsurenakarishi o uramiken awazu wa kakaru omoi semashi ya
Why did I ever resent your coldness? Had we never met, would I be suffering such brooding now?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mukawaraba waga nageki no mukui nite tare yue kimi ga mono o omowan
If retribution comes round, then in return for my grieving, for whose sake, I wonder, will you one day come to brood over love?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mi no usa no omoishiraruru kotowari ni osaerarenu wa namida narikeri
Though I know full well the reason, my own unworthy lot, what that reason cannot hold back, I find, are my tears.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hi o fureba tamoto no ame no ashi soite harubeku mo naki waga kokoro kana
As the days go by, the rain of tears on my sleeves falls ever harder, and my heart shows no sign of clearing.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kakikurasu namida no ame no ashi shigemi sakari ni mono no nagekashiki kana
The rain of my tears pours down so hard from a darkened sky that my brooding swells to its very height, and how grievous it is!
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mono omoedomo kakaranu hito mo aru mono o aware narikeru mi no chigiri kana
There are others who brood over love without suffering as I do, and how pitiful, then, is the karmic bond that is mine!
Sankashu - Saigyō
Naozari no nasake wa hito no aru mono o tayuru wa tsune no narai naredomo
Surely you have at least a token of kindness to show me, though it is the way of the world for love to break off.
Sankashu - Saigyō
