Nani to ko wa kazumaerarenu mi no hodo ni hito o uramuru kokoro nariken
What can this be? How did I, too humble even to be counted among others, come to have a heart that resents you?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Uki fushi o mazu omoishiru namida kana sa nomi koso wa to nagusamuredomo
It is my tears that know every painful turn first of all, though I console myself that this is only how things are.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Samazama ni omoimidaruru kokoro oba kimi ga moto ni zo tsukaneatsumuru
My heart, tangled in so many ways, I gather and bind into a single sheaf at your side.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mono omoeba chiji ni kokoro zo kudakenuru Shinoda no mori no chie naranedomo
When I brood over love my heart breaks into a thousand pieces, though it is not the thousand-branched tree of Shinoda Forest.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kakaru mi ni ōshitateken tarachine no oya sae tsuraki koi mo suru kana
Mine is a love so painful that I even resent the parents who must have raised me to become someone like this.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Obotsukana nani no mukui no kaerikite kokoro semuru ada to naruran
How troubling it is! For what deed of a former life has this retribution come back round to become the foe that torments my heart?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kakimidaru kokoro yasumenu kotogusa wa aware aware to nageku bakari ka
Are the only words on the lips of this tangled, restless heart 'ah me, ah me,' nothing but sighs of grief?
Knowing my station, I do not think of it as your fault, yet my sleeves grow wet with tears as though they wore a look of reproach.
Compared with the pain of growing close, the resentment I felt when we were still strangers was, I find, something I could bear calmly.
You are cold, and my grief is not eased in the least. Then what, oh what, am I to do with this heart?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hi ni soete urami wa itodo ōumi no yutaka narikeru waga omoi kana
As the days go by my resentment swells ever greater, and my feelings have grown as abundant as the great sea.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Saru koto no aru narikeri to omoiidete shinobu kokoro o shinobe to zo omou
Remembering that such things once were between us, I tell the heart that longs for you to endure and keep its longing hidden.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kyō zo shiru omoiideyo to chigirishi wa wasuren tote no nasake narikeri
Today I know: when you promised 'remember me,' it was the kindness of one who meant to forget.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Naniwagata nami nomi itodo kazu soite urami no hima ya sode no kawakan
On Naniwa Bay only the waves grow ever more in number; with my resentment never ceasing, when would my sleeves have time to dry?
Does one visit another only out of love? Surely not; I can only wonder why you will not show me even a little kindness.
Your words saying that you understand my heart are, if anything, more bitter than sending me no word at all.
Sankashu - Saigyō
