Is this world, empty as a cicada's shell, only a dream? The cherry blossoms bloomed and now have fallen. Alas, how long will it go on?

Each spring, looking at the old cherry tree rotting away, I think, "Ah, the days gone by," but such thoughts are in vain.

Naniwagata ukifushi shigeki ashi no ha ni okitaru tsuyu no aware yo no naka
Like the dew on the leaves of the reeds of Naniwa Bay, so thick with joints, so thick with bitter moments, alas for this fleeting world of ours.

Kakute nomi arite hakanaki yo no naka o ushi to ya iwamu aware to ya iwamu
This fleeting world, where we only go on living like this—shall I call it bitter, or shall I call it sad?

Utsutsu to mo yume to mo shiranu yo ni shi areba ari tote ari to tanomubeki mi ka
Since this is a world where we cannot tell waking from dreaming, can I trust that I am truly alive just because I live?

Tonikaku ni areba arikeru yo ni shi areba nashi tote mo naki yo o mo furu kamo
Since, one way or another, this is a world that goes on as long as there is something, even those who have nothing pass their days in it with nothing.

Tonikaku ni ana sadamena no yo no naka ya yorokobu mono areba waburu mono ari
One way or another, ah, how uncertain this world is! Where someone rejoices, there is someone else who grieves.

All things in this world, the worthy and the worthless alike, when I think them through, turn out to have been a dream.

It is nothing that should startle me to hear, yet this world is truly a fleeting dream.

How pitiful! Watching, I cannot stop my tears: a child with no parents left, searching for its mother.
