Ōkenaku ukiyo no tami ni ōu kana waga tatsu soma ni sumizome no sode
Presumptuous though it is, I spread over the people of this sorrowful world the ink-dyed sleeves I first put on when I came to dwell on this timbered mountain.
Senzai Wakashu - Jien
Sabishisa o ukiyo ni kaete shinobazu wa hitori kikubeki matsu no kaze ka wa
Were I not bearing this loneliness in exchange for the sorrows of the world, is this a wind in the pines one could listen to alone? Surely not.
Senzai Wakashu - Jakuren
Tsukuzuku to omoeba kanashi akatsuki no nezame mo yume o miru ni zo arikeru
When I think on it deeply, how sad it is: even waking before the dawn is, I find, only another way of seeing a dream.
Senzai Wakashu - Inpumon-in no Taifu
Madoromite sate mo yaminaba ikaga sen nezame zo aranu inochi narikeru
What if I should doze off and simply end like that? It is waking in the night, I find, that shows a life I thought was gone still goes on.
Senzai Wakashu - Saijū
Sakidatsu o miru wa nao koso kanashikere okurehatsubeki kono yo naranedo
To watch others go before me is still so sad, though this is not a world where any of us can stay behind for good.
Senzai Wakashu - Rokujōin no Senji
Ima wa tote kakinasu koto no hate no o ni kokorobosoku mo narimasaru kana
At the last string of the koto played as if to say "this is the end," the end too of worldly things, my heart grows ever more forlorn.
Senzai Wakashu - Shikibu of the Nijō Grand Empress Dowager
Ōigawa Tonase no taki ni mi o nagete hayaku to hito ni iwasete shi kana
I would cast myself into the falls of Tonase on the Ōi River, and have people say of me, "He was gone so soon."
Senzai Wakashu - Kūnin
Toribeyama kimi tazunu tomo kuchihatete koke no shita ni wa kotaezaramashi
Had I died, though you came to seek me at Toribe Mountain, I would have rotted away and could give no answer from beneath the moss.
Senzai Wakashu - Ōe no Kinkage
Wakewabite itoishi niwa no yomogiu mo karenu to omou wa aware narikeri
Even the mugwort in my garden, which I once disliked for being hard to push through, now that I think it has withered and visitors have gone, moves me deeply.
Senzai Wakashu - Kenkaku
Yo no naka no uki wa ima koso ureshikere omoishirazu wa itowamashi ya wa
The sorrows of the world are now, of all things, a joy to me. Had I not come to know them, would I ever have turned away from the world?
Senzai Wakashu - Jakuren
Yo o somuki kusa no iori ni sumizome no koromo no iro wa kaeru mono ka wa
Having turned from the world and come to live in a grass hut, can the ink-dyed color of my robe ever turn back again? Nor shall I go back.
Senzai Wakashu - Kakushun
Omoiyare narawanu yama ni sumizome no sode ni tsuyu oku aki no keshiki o
Imagine how it is: in mountains I am not used to, I have begun to dwell, and on my ink-dyed sleeves the autumn dew lies.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Michikiyo
Akatsuki no arashi ni taguu kane no oto o kokoro no soko ni kotaete zo kiku
The sound of the bell borne along by the storm before dawn, I hear it echoing back from the very bottom of my heart.
Senzai Wakashu - Saigyō
Izuku ni ka mi o kakusamashi itoiidete ukiyo ni fukaki yama nakariseba
Where should I hide myself, having fled the world in weariness, if in this sorrowful world there were no deep mountains?
Senzai Wakashu - Saigyō
Yo no naka yo michi koso nakere omoiiru yama no oku ni mo shika zo naku naru
Ah, this world of ours: there is no road of escape. Even deep in the mountains I have entered, lost in thought, I hear a deer crying.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Omou koto ariakegata no shika no ne wa nao yama fukaku iei seyo to ya
The cry of the deer at dawn, as the moon lingers and my heart is full of care, is it telling me to make my home still deeper in the hills?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshikiyo
