Sankashu - Saigyō
Nagekaruru kokoro no uchi no kurushisa o hito no shiraba ya kimi ni kataran
If someone else came to know the pain in my heart, which cannot help grieving, would they tell it to you?

Sankashu - Saigyō
Ayausa ni hitome zo tsune ni yokarekeru iwa no kado fumu hoki no kakemichi
Out of fear, I always find myself avoiding others' eyes, as if treading on the jutting rocks of a ledge path along a cliff.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shirazariki mi ni amaritaru nageki shite hima naku sode o shiboru beshi to wa
I never knew that, with a grief too great to bear, I would have to wring out my sleeves without a moment's rest.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Fuku kaze ni tsuyu mo tamaranu kuzu no ha no urakaere to wa kimi koso omoe
Like kudzu leaves that cannot hold a drop of dew in the blowing wind, "turn over to resentment"—it must be you who wish it so.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Warekara to mo ni sumu mushi no na ni shi oeba hito o ba sara ni urami ya wa suru
Since I bear the name of the little creature living in seaweed, warekara, "through my own fault," how could I ever resent her?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Munashikute yaminu beki kana utsusemi no kono mi kara nite omou nageki wa
It must surely end in emptiness—this grief I feel, which comes from this self of mine, hollow as a cicada's cast-off shell.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsutsumedomo sode yori hoka ni koboreidete ushirometaki wa namida narikeri
However I wrap them, they spill out beyond my sleeves—it is my tears that keep me ever uneasy.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ware nagara utagawarenuru kokoro kana yue naku sode o shiboru beki ka wa
Even to myself, this heart of mine seems suspect—would I be wringing out my sleeves like this for no reason at all?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Saru koto no aru beki ka wa to shinobarete kokoro itsu made misao naruran
Thinking "how could such a thing be?" I manage to keep it hidden—but how long will my heart stay calm and composed?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Torinokoshi omoi mo kakenu tsuyuharai ana kuratakano waga kokoro ya
Left behind, I have ended up as one who merely clears the dew from another's path, never what I had imagined. Ah, how blind and dark this heart of mine is!
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kimi ni somu kokoro no iro no fukasa ni wa nioi mo sara ni mienu narikeri
So deep is the color of my heart, dyed in you, that not the slightest glow of it shows on the surface.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sa mo koso wa hitome omowazu narihatete ana samaniku no sode no shizuku ya
Even so, I have stopped caring altogether what others see—ah, how unsightly are these drops of tears on my sleeves!
Sankashu - Saigyō
Katsu susugu sawa no kozeri no ne o shiromi kiyoge ni mono o omowazu mogana
Like the little cress in the marsh, whose roots wash white as they are rinsed, if only I could be pure and free of brooding.
Sankashu - Saigyō
