Ikasama ni omoitsuzukete uramimashi hitoe ni tsuraki kimi naranaku ni
How should I go on thinking and resenting you, when you are not someone who is simply cruel?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Uramite mo nagusamete mashi nakanaka ni tsurakute hito no awanu to omoeba
Even as I resent her, I may find some comfort in it, if I think she does not meet me simply because she is cold.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Uchitaete kimi ni au hito ika nare ya waga mi mo onaji yo ni koso wa fure
What sort of person is it who meets you, having cut off all other ties? I too live in this same world.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tonikaku ni itowamahoshiki yo naredomo kimi ga sumu ni mo hikarenuru kana
This is a world I long in every way to cast off, yet the fact that you live in it holds my heart back.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nanigoto ni tsukete ka yo o ba itowamashi ukarishi hito zo kyō wa ureshiki
On what pretext should I now forsake the world? The one who was once so cold has today become my joy.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Au to mishi sono yo nori no samete are na nagaki nemuri wa ukaru bekeredo
May the dream of that night when I saw us meet never end in waking—though the long sleep it would become must surely be bitter.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Maki goto ni tama no koe seshi tamazusa no tagui wa mata mo arikeru mono o
Scroll after scroll, letters ringing with voices like jewels—who would have thought there could be more of their kind in this world!
Sankashu - Lady Shōnagon of the Retired Emperor's household
Yoshi saraba hikari naku to mo tama to iite kotoba no chiri wa kimi migakanan
Well then, since you call them jewels though they have no light, I ask you to polish away the dust that clings to my words.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Matsuyama no nami ni nagarete koshi fune no yagate munashiku narinikeru kana
Like a boat carried here on the waves of Matsuyama that soon drifted empty, our lord has passed away in this place.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Matsuyama no nami no keshiki wa kawaraji o katanaku kimi wa narimashinikeri
The waves of Matsuyama surely look as they always did, yet you, my lord, have vanished without a trace.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yoshi ya kimi mukashi no tama no yuka to te mo kakaran nochi wa nani ni ka wa sen
Ah, my lord, though once it was a jeweled throne, now that things have come to this, what use can it be to you?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kumori naki yama nite umi no tsuki mireba shima zo kōri no taema narikeru
Looking from the cloudless mountain at the moon over the sea, I see that the islands are the gaps in a sheet of ice.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ima yori wa itowaji inochi areba koso kakaru sumai no aware o mo shire
From now on I will not despise my life, for only because I am alive can I know the deep charm of a dwelling such as this.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hisa ni hete waga nochi no yo o toe yo matsu ato shinobu beki hito mo naki mi zo
Pine tree, through the long years, mourn for me when I am gone, for I have no one who will remember me after my death.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Koko o mata ware sumiukute ukarenaba matsu wa hitori ni naran to suran
If I should once again find it hard to live here and wander off, I suppose this pine would be left all alone.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Matsu no shita wa yuki furu ori no iro nare ya mina shirotae ni miyuru yamaji ni
Is this the color that stays beneath the pines even when snow falls? All along the mountain path, everything looks pure white.
Sankashu - Saigyō
