Tazu ga ne no kikoyuru tai ni iori shite ware tabi nari to imo ni tsuge koso

English Translation
Where the cranes' cries sound,
by the fields I've built a hut
and I lodge in it—
"I am on a journey here,"
tell my darling this, I pray.
Meaning
Tell my wife that I have built a hut and lodge among the fields where the cranes' cries are heard—that I am on a journey.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2249

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through the Paddy Fields"
This poem, lodging in a makeshift hut by fields where the cries of cranes are heard, asks that the wife be told he is on a journey. In the lonely paddy landscape echoing with cranes' voices, longing for the wife at home grows. Whereas the preceding poem was sung from the side of one who thinks of the person in the hut, this one asks from the hut's side for a message to be sent to the wife, so the two form a pair.

The first line, "of the cranes' cries," names the sound.
The second line, "by the fields where they are heard," names the place.
The third line, "lodging in a hut," names the stay.
The fourth line, "that I am on a journey," gives the message.
In the last line, "imo ni tsuge koso," "koso" is a particle of wishing: tell my wife.
