Book Ten Love Poems II 684
Headnote: "Because someone said that calling the moon moving was a thing to be avoided."
The poet says that, sitting up in the misery of sleeping alone, she cannot help feeling moved by the moon. Though told it is unlucky to be moved by the moon, she shows a heart that, in the loneliness of sleeping alone, still gazes at it.
According to the headnote, someone said that to call the moon moving was a thing to be avoided. The idea that gazing at the moon is unlucky also appears in the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Hitorine no," means "of sleeping alone."
The second line, "wabishiki mama ni," means "in my loneliness."
The third line, "okiitsutsu," means "sitting up awake," with "tsutsu" expressing continuation.
The fourth line, "tsuki o aware to," means "finding the moon deeply moving."
The last line, "imi zo kanetsuru," means "I cannot refrain," with "zo" an emphatic particle closing with the attributive "tsuru," a kakarimusubi pattern.
