Hikiueshi futaba no matsu wa arinagara kimi ga chitose no naki zo kanashiki

English Translation
Though the seedling pine
we planted with its two leaves
is still standing here,
that your thousand years are gone—
that is what brings me grief
Meaning
The little two-leaved pine we planted is still here, yet you, for whom we wished a thousand years, are gone—that is what grieves me.
Commentary
Book Twenty Congratulatory Poems 1411

Headnote: "After Lord Kanesuke died, on coming up from the province of Tosa, at his house in Awata."
The poet says that though the two-leaved pine once planted remains, it is sad that the master's thousand years are no more. The young pine he planted has grown and stands there still, yet the one whose long life was celebrated is gone, and he mourns the patron who had sheltered him.
According to the headnote, after Fujiwara no Kanesuke died, the poet came up to the capital from Tosa and composed this at Kanesuke's house in Awata. The poet had enjoyed Kanesuke's patronage. The "thousand years" wished for "you" in congratulatory poems of this book such as 1369 appear here as something lost, so that congratulation and mourning stand in contrast.
The poet, "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. A son of Ki no Mochiyuki, he was the chief compiler of the Kokinshu and wrote its Japanese preface. He is also known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu includes his poem "Hito wa isa kokoro mo shirazu furusato wa."

The first line, "Hikiueshi," means "that was pulled up and transplanted."
The second line, "futaba no matsu wa," means "the two-leaved pine," a sapling pine, emblem of long life.
The third line, "arinagara," means "though it remains," with "nagara" concessive.
The fourth line, "kimi ga chitose no," means "your thousand years," the same words as the fourth line of 1369 in this book.
The last line, "naki zo kanashiki," means "that they are gone is sad," with "zo" closed by the attributive "kanashiki."
