Book Twelve Love Poems II 702
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem laments that, like things rolling together on bamboo leaves, the poet's name rises in rumor though the lovers have never lain together. Pivoting "nuru" on "sleeping" together and "getting wet" on the leaves, it expresses the injustice of baseless gossip. The poem is generally known with the second line "okiiru tsuyu no," dew resting on the leaves, likening dewdrops rolling together on bamboo leaves to lovers drawing close.
The author, written as "Hitomaro," is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro. A court poet of the Asuka period, he is revered as the sage of poetry and the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. The Shūishū includes many Man'yōshū poems under his name.
The second line of the main text reads "okiiru koto no," which does not match "okiiru tsuyu no" in the reading line. Here the main text is followed.
First line, "take no ha ni," means "on the bamboo leaves."
Second line, "okiiru koto no," means "the things resting there." The reading line has "okiiru tsuyu no," which makes it the dew resting on the bamboo leaves.
Third line, "marobiaite," means "rolling together and touching," suggesting lovers drawing close.
Fourth line, "nuru to wa nashi ni," is a pivot word: "nuru" means "sleeping" together and "getting wet" on the leaves.
Final line, "tatsu waga na kana," means "how my name rises," with "kana" exclamatory. It shares the lament of one's name rising with the second line of the next poem, 703, "waga na wa tachite."
