Book Three Summer Poems 221
Headnote: "Composed on seeking the cool for a poetry contest held by Yorisuke, Minister of Justice"
Composed on "seeking the cool" for a poetry contest held by Fujiwara no Yorisuke, Minister of Justice. To this village by the deep mountains only the sound of valley water beating on the rocks comes calling, and summer passes by without ever finding it. Personifying summer, the poem portrays a mountain village so cool that even summer cannot find it, together with the voice of the stream.
The author, "Former Consultant Norinaga," is Fujiwara no Norinaga, son of Major Counselor Fujiwara no Tadanori, who rose to Consultant. He joined Retired Emperor Sutoku's side in the Hōgen Disturbance and was exiled to Hitachi. Known also as a master calligrapher, he was one of the poets of the Kyūan Hundred-Poem Sequence.
This poem and the next, 222, are both poems on seeking the cool composed for Yorisuke's poetry contest.
First line, "iwa tataku": "beating on the rocks," a swift-flowing valley stream.
Second line, "tani no mizu nomi": the restrictive "nomi" gives "only the valley water."
Third line, "otozurete": "coming to call," with an echo of "oto," the sound of the water.
Fourth line, "natsu ni shirarenu": "re" is the irrealis of the passive "ru" and "nu" the attributive of the negative: "unknown to summer." Like "natsu no hoka naru" in 210 and "hoka yori natsu o" in 212 of this book, it sings of a coolness lying outside summer.
Fifth line, "miyamabe no sato": ends on a noun, a village beside the deep mountains.
