Book Thirteen Love Poems III 800
Headnote: "Composed on the heart of love when hundred-poem sequences were presented"
Composed on the heart of love when hundred-poem sequences were presented; the sequences are the Kyūan Hundred-Poem Sequences presented to Retired Emperor Sutoku. I had heard that longing ends with meeting, he says, yet after meeting it has only grown. The common saying that love's longing is fulfilled and ends once lovers meet is betrayed when longing only swells after meeting, and the poem conveys how love deepens after the meeting.
The author, "Former Imperial Adviser Norinaga," is Fujiwara no Norinaga. The son of Major Counselor Fujiwara no Tadanori, he rose to Imperial Adviser. A close retainer of Retired Emperor Sutoku, he was exiled after the Hōgen Disturbance. He was also known as a calligrapher and was one of the poets of the Kyūan sequences.
The five poems from this one to 804 are all love poems from the Kyūan sequences.
First line, "koishisa wa": "longing," stating the theme.
Second line, "au o kagiri to": "that meeting is its end," the common saying that longing ends once lovers meet.
Third line, "kikishikado": "shika" is the realized form of the past "ki" and "do" an adversative particle, "though I had heard."
Fourth line, "sate shimo itodo": "sate" means "having met," "shimo" is emphatic, and "itodo" means "all the more."
Fifth line, "omoi soikeri": "sou" is to be added, and "keri" expresses realization, "my longing only grew."
