Book Six Winter Poems 451
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The deep mountain road is buried by snow that keeps on falling, the poet says, so how can he follow the hoofprints of the horse? It sings of the forlornness of a snowy mountain road, where even the hoofprints left by one who went before, the only guide, are at once erased by the falling snow.
The author, "Former Consultant Norinaga," is Fujiwara no Norinaga, son of Major Counselor Fujiwara no Tadanori, who rose to Consultant. Known as a fine calligrapher, he sided with Sutoku in the Hōgen Disturbance and was exiled to Hitachi. He was one of the authors of Sutoku's Kyūan Hyakushu.
Poems on snow continue from 445 to 467. 463 of this book uses almost the same words, "koma no ato wa katsu furu yuki ni uzumorete," to imagine the confusion of those coming after. The two poems sing of the same scene from opposite sides: the one who follows the tracks, and the one who goes ahead leaving them.
First line, "miyamaji wa": "the road through the deep mountains."
Second line, "katsu furu yuki ni": "katsu" means "one after another," the snow falling without end. 463 of this book has the same phrase.
Third line, "uzumorete": "buried in the snow." In this book the phrase "uzumorete" recurs in 454, 457, 458, 462 and 463.
Fourth line, "ikade ka koma no": "ikade ka" is rhetorical, "how could I," closing with the attributive "n" in the last line. "Koma" is a horse.
Fifth line, "ato o tazunen": "tazunu" is to trace and seek out.
