Book Eleven Love Poems I 648
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Though I hid my love, he says, my sleeves revealed it through my tears, and now others know that I am in love. However much he tries to conceal it, the tears that wet his sleeves become a proof of love that cannot be hidden.
The author, "the Naka-no-in Minister of the Right," is Minamoto no Masasada. The son of Grand Minister Minamoto no Masazane, he rose to Minister of the Right and was called the Naka-no-in Minister of the Right.
The next poem, 649, opens with the same line, "tsutsumedomo." Where this poem says that love became known through tears, the next says that, unable to bear it, the lover longs to confess unasked, so that the two poems show two outcomes of a hidden love.
First line, "tsutsumedomo": "tsutsume" is the perfective of "tsutsumu," and with "domo" it becomes adversative, "though I hide my love." It is the same as the first line of the next poem.
Second line, "namida ni sode no": "through my tears, my sleeves."
Third line, "arawarete": "my hidden love comes to light," referring to the tear-wet sleeves catching others' eyes. It shares the word with "arawarete dani" in the fourth line of 641 of this book.
Fourth line, "koi su to hito ni": "to others, that I am in love."
Fifth line, "shirarenuru kana": "re" is the continuative of the passive "ru" and "nuru" the attributive of the perfective "nu," "it has become known."
