Miscellaneous Poems 1211
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Reply"
The fourth of Jakunen's ten. For no clear reason the dew spills down as the bird clappers are rattled in the autumn fields of Ōhara.
Hita are boards pulled by rope to rattle and scare birds from the fields. In the scene of dew spilling from the rice each time the clappers sound, a heart moved to tears is laid, the dew echoing tears. The loneliness of a farming village in autumn seeps through.
First line, “nani to naku”: for no particular reason.
Second line, “tsuyu zo koboruru”: zo is emphatic, answered by the attributive koboruru; dew echoes tears.
Third line, “aki no ta ni”: in the autumn fields.
Fourth line, “hita hikinarasu”: hita are boards pulled by rope to rattle and scare birds.
Fifth line, “ōhara no sato”: ending on a noun, the last line shared by the series.
