Miscellaneous Poems 1212
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Reply"
The fifth of Jakunen's ten. The sound of water seems to fall right onto his pillow, and he often wakes in the night in Ōhara.
The closeness of the sound, expressed as "falling on my pillow," is striking. Answering Saigyō's 1198 on the sound of the valley stream at Kōya, it sings of the water of Ōhara. The phrase "nezamegachi naru" also appeared in 1166 of this book, and the scenes of sleep broken by waves and by water echo each other.
First line, “mizu no oto wa”: the sound of the water; the line has an extra syllable.
Second line, “makura ni otsuru”: falling onto the pillow, how near the sound is.
Third line, “kokochi shite”: feeling so.
Fourth line, “nezamegachi naru”: apt to wake in the night.
Fifth line, “ōhara no sato”: ending on a noun, the last line shared by the series.
