the kerria upon the bank—

say that it is dear, I pray.

Spring Poems 124
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Having a spray of yellow kerria broken off to send to someone"
Like the preceding poem, this accompanied kerria sent to someone. The poet hopes the recipient will say that this one spray of kerria, still unfallen on the bank in late spring, is dear. Putting his heart into the single branch, he awaits a word in return.
The Ruijū text reads the last line aware to iwan.
Line 1 moves the fourth line of the preceding poem, 123, to the opening.
Line 2 takes up the words of the preceding poem's last line.
Line 3 is the same as the preceding poem's third line; the phrases of the two poems are rearranged.
Line 4 names the single branch broken off and sent.
Line 5: namu expresses a wish directed at another, "I hope you will say it is dear." Where the preceding poem asked the recipient to look, this one asks for words, and the two form a pair.
