My love finds comfort only in dreams, for there even you, so cold to me, seem to come and meet me.
Would my love simply have ended, with nothing at all to console me, if even in my dreams you had been as cold as you are?
Shika Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kinyoshi
Inochi araba au yo mo aramu yo no naka ni nado shinu bakari omou kokoro zo
As long as I am alive, there must come a time in this world when we can meet; why, then, does my heart long for you so much that it feels it could die?
Yoso nagara aware to iwamu koto yori mo hitozute narade itoe to zo omou
Rather than have you pity me from afar, I would sooner you rejected me yourself, not through someone else.
Koishinaba kimi wa aware to iwazu tomo nakanaka yoso no hito ya shinobamu
If I were to die of love, you would not even say "how sad"; might not some stranger, far removed from me, mourn me instead?
Ikabakari hito no tsurasa o uramimashi uki mi no toga to omoinasazu wa
How bitterly I would resent your coldness, had I not made myself believe it was the fault of my own unhappy lot.
Ika naramu koto no ha nite ka nabiku beki koishi to iu wa kai nakarikeri
With what words might I ever win you over? Simply telling you "I love you" has done no good at all.
Leaving aside the one who has been so cold to me, should I resent the world, which has done nothing wrong?
I lived on, hoping that I might forget, but my longing has clung to me and never once fallen behind.
Shika Wakashu - Taira no Kanemori
Toshi o hete moyu chō Fuji no yama yori mo awanu omoi wa ware zo masareru
Even more than Mount Fuji, which they say has burned through all the years, the fire of a love that cannot meet burns stronger in me.
Shika Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wabinureba shiite wasuremu to omoedomo kokoro yowaku mo otsuru namida ka
Worn down by love, I try to force myself to forget, yet how weak my heart is — the tears keep falling.
Shika Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Omowaji to omoeba itodo koishiki wa izuchi ka waga kokoro naruramu
When I resolve to think of you no more, I only long for you all the more; which of these, then, is truly my own heart?
Shika Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Kokoro sae musubu no kami ya tsukurikemu tokuru keshiki mo mienu kimi kana
Did the god of binding fashion even your heart in a tight knot? You show not the least sign of softening toward me.
Shika Wakashu - Nōin
Hitokata ni omoi taenishi yo no naka o ikaga wa subeki shizu no odamaki
I had cut off all thought of you entirely; what am I to do with our bond now? Like thread wound on a spindle of shizu cloth, can it ever be wound back again?
Shika Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kintō
You whose face I never see, are you the moon on a rainy night? Even when you came out, no one ever knew it.
Like the thread strung this morning in offering for Tanabata, bending beneath the weight of dew, must my love end without my ever seeing you yield to me?
