- Kinyo Wakashu
Saranu dani tama ni magaite oku tsuyu o itodo migakeru aki no yo no tsuki
The dew already lies there looking like jewels, and the moon of the autumn night polishes it brighter still.
Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Nakamasa
Yo to tomo ni kumoranu kumo no ue nareba omou koto naku tsuki o miru kana
Since I dwell above the clouds, in the palace that never clouds over through the ages, I gaze at the moon without a care.
Matsu ga ne ni koromo katashiki yomosugara nagamuru tsuki o imo miruramu ka
Sleeping alone at the foot of a pine with one sleeve spread beneath me, I gaze at the moon all night. Is my beloved gazing at it too?
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Akisue
Nagamureba oboenu koto mo nakarikeri tsuki ya mukashi no katami naruramu
As I gaze at the moon, there is nothing from the past that does not come back to me. Could the moon be a keepsake of days gone by?
Morotomo ni itsu to wa nashi ni ariake no tsuki nomi okuru yamaji o zo yuku
Before I knew it, the dawn moon was there beside me, and now it alone sees me off as I go along the mountain road.
Kinyo Wakashu - Yoen
Ariake no tsuki matsu hodo no utatane wa yamanoha nomi zo yume ni miekeru
Dozing while I waited for the dawn moon to rise, I saw only the rim of the mountain in my dreams.
Yamazato no kadota no ine no honobono to akuru mo shirazu tsuki o miru kana
In the mountain village, dawn breaks dimly, as dim as the rice ears in the field before the gate, and unaware of it, I go on gazing at the moon.
Ariake no tsuki mo akashi no urakaze ni nami bakari koso yoru to mieshika
At Akashi, where the dawn moon shines so brightly in the sea breeze, only the waves rolling in showed that it was night.
Arashi o ya hamori no kami mo tataruramu tsuki ni momiji no tamuke shitekeri
Does even the god who guards the leaves bring a curse upon the storm? For it has scattered the bright leaves as an offering to the moon.
Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
Tsuyu shigeki nobe ni naraite kirigirisu waga tamakura no shita ni naku nari
Used to dew-soaked fields, the cricket seems to be singing beneath the arm I sleep on, wet as it is with my tears.
Kinyo Wakashu - Taikenmon-in no Horikawa
Sasagani no ito hikikakuru kusamura ni hataoru mushi no koe zo kikoyuru
In the clump of grass where the spider spins and hangs its threads, I hear the voice of the insect that weaves at the loom.
Tamazusa wa kakete kitaredo karigane no uwa no sora ni mo kikoyu naru kana
Though the wild geese come carrying letters on their wings, their cries sound from high in the sky, as distant and absent as a wandering mind.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Imoseyama mine no arashi ya samukaramu koromo karigane sora ni naku nari
Is the storm on the peaks of Mount Imose so cold? The wild geese cry in the sky as if begging to borrow a robe.
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kinzane
Tsuma kouru shika zo naku naru hitorine no toko no yamakaze mi ni ya shimuramu
I hear the stag crying for his mate. Does the mountain wind of Toko, the hill whose name means bed, chill him to the bone as he sleeps alone?
Omou koto ariake gata no tsukikage ni aware o souru saoshika no koe
Troubled and sleepless as the dawn moon lingers, I hear the stag's cry, adding yet more sorrow to the scene.
Yowa ni naku koe ni kokoro zo akugaruru waga mi wa shika no tsuma naranedomo
At the stag's cry in the middle of the night my heart wanders off toward it, though I am no mate of his.
