Asagoto no kagami no kage ni omonarete yukimi ni to shimo isogarenu kana
So used have I grown to the reflection in my mirror each morning that I feel no urge to hurry out to view the snow.
Sumigama ni tatsu keburi sae onoyama wa yukige no kumo ni miyuru narikeri
On Mount Ono, even the smoke rising from the charcoal kilns looks like a cloud heavy with snow.
Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Morotoki
Miyako dani yuki furinureba shigaraki no maki no somayama ato taenuramu
If snow has fallen even in the capital, then on the timber hills of Shigaraki every trace of passersby must have vanished.
Kinyo Wakashu - Ryūgen
Michi mo naku tsumoreru yuki ni ato taete furusato ika ni sabishikaruramu
With the snow piled so deep that no path can be seen and all traces of visitors gone, how lonely my old home must be.
Kinyo Wakashu - Kyōgoku Kanpaku-ke no Higo
Kakikurashi ame furu yowa ya ika naramu tsuki to yuki to wa kai nakarikeri
How will it be on a night when the sky darkens and rain falls? Both moonlit nights and snowy nights were all in vain.
Sakakiba ya tachimau sode no oikaze ni nabikanu kami wa araji to zo omou
To the wind raised by the sleeves of one who dances holding sakaki leaves, there is surely no god who would not bend.
Kamigaki no mimuro no yama ni shimo fureba yūshide kakenu sakakiba zo naki
When frost falls on the hill of Mimuro within the sacred fence, there is not a single sakaki leaf that does not seem hung with white offering strands.
Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Morotoki
Tsunaganedo nagare mo yukazu takasebune musubu kōri no tokenu kagiri wa
Though it is not tied by any rope, the shallow boat does not drift with the current, so long as the ice that binds it does not melt.
Namimakura ika ni ukine o sadamuramu kōri masuda no ike no oshidori
With only the waves for a pillow, how do the mandarin ducks on Masuda Pond, where the ice grows thicker, find a place for their floating sleep?
Samushiro ni omoi koso yare sasa no ha ni sayuru shimoyo no oshi no hitorine
Lying on my cold, narrow mat, I think of the mandarin duck sleeping alone on a frosty night, when the frost lies freezing on the leaves of bamboo grass.
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Akisue
Nani to naku toshi no kururu wa oshikeredo hana no yukari ni haru o matsu kana
Somehow I regret that the year is drawing to a close, yet for the sake of the flowers, I find myself waiting for spring.
Hito shirezu kureyuku toshi o oshimu ma ni haru itou na no tachinubeki kana
While I secretly mourn the passing year, a reputation for disliking spring will surely spread about me.
Kazouru ni nokori sukunaki mi ni shi areba semete mo oshiki toshi no kure kana
When I count, I see that I have few years left, and so the end of this year is all the more painful to let go.
Ika ni semu kureyuku toshi o shirube nite mi o tazunetsutsu oi wa kinikeri
What am I to do? With the passing year as its guide, old age has sought me out and come at last.
Toshi kurenu to bakari o koso kikamashika waga mi no ue ni tsumorazariseba
I would have heard only that the year had ended and thought nothing more of it, if the years did not pile up upon me.
Nanigoto o matsu to wa nashi ni akekurete kotoshi mo kyō ni narinikeru kana
Not waiting for anything in particular, I have passed the days from dawn to dusk, and now this year too has come to its final day.
