Chiyo furedo omogawari senu kawatake wa nagarete no yo no tameshi narikeri
The river bamboo, whose face does not change though a thousand years pass, is a model for a reign that will flow on into the ages to come.
Yorozuyo wa makasetarubeshi iwashimizu nagaki nagare o kimi ni yosoete
The ten thousand ages may be left to the spring of Iwashimizu, likening its long, unbroken stream to the reign of our lord.
Mizu no omo ni matsu no shizue no hichinureba chitose wa ike no kokoro narikeri
Because the lower branches of the pine are steeped in the water, its thousand years now dwell at the heart of the pond and lie at the pond's will.
Kokonoe ni hisashiku nioe yaezakura nodokeki haru no kaze to shirazu ya
Bloom on in beauty for long years within the palace, double cherry blossoms; do you not know that this wind is the wind of a calm and peaceful spring?
Yorozuyo to sashite mo iwaji sakurabana kazasamu haru shi kagiri nakereba
I will not set a limit and say ten thousand ages, for the springs in which we wear cherry blossoms in our hair will go on without end.
Onozukara waga mi sae koso iwaharure tare ka chiyo ni mo awamahoshisa ni
Without meaning to, I find myself blessing even my own life; for who would not long to live on and meet a reign of a thousand ages?
Kimi ga yo wa matsu no uwaba ni oku tsuyu no tsumorite yomo no umi to naru made
May our lord's reign last until the dew that settles on the topmost leaves of the pine gathers drop by drop into the seas on every side.
Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
Kimi ga yo no hodo o ba shirade sumiyoshi no matsu o hisashi to omoikeru kana
Not knowing how long our lord's reign would last, I had thought the pines of Sumiyoshi were the very image of long life.
Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Tsunenobu
Kimi ga yo wa sue no matsuyama harubaru to kosu shiranami no kazu mo shirarezu
Our lord's reign stretches far into the future, beyond counting, like the white waves that roll from afar over Sue no Matsuyama.
Ikemizu no soko sae niou hanazakura miru tomo akaji chiyo no haru made
The cherry blossoms glow even in the depths of the pond's water; I will never tire of gazing at them, even until the springs of a thousand ages.
Oto takaki tsuzumi no yama no uchihaete tanoshiki miyo to naru zo ureshiki
Like the loud drum that gives Tsuzumi Mountain its name, beating on and on, the reign goes on and becomes a joyful one, and that makes me glad.
Kumori naki toyo no akari ni ōmi naru asahi no sato wa hikari sashisou
Meeting the cloudless Feast of Plenty, the Village of the Morning Sun in the province of Ōmi shines with light added to light.
Matsukaze no okoto no sato ni kayou ni zo osamareru yo no koe wa kikoyuru
As the wind in the pines blows through the village of Okoto, we hear in it the voice of a world well at peace.
Mitsugimono hakobu yohoro o kazoureba nima no satobito kazu soinikeri
When I count the laborers carrying the tribute, I find that the people of Nima Village have grown in number.
Nawashiro no mizu wa inai ni makasetari tami yasuge naru kimi ga miyo kana
The water for the seedling beds is drawn from Inai and left to flow as it will; how peaceful the people are in our lord's reign.
Itsu to naku kaze fuku sora ni tatsu chiri no kazu mo shirarenu kimi ga miyo kana
Like the countless motes of dust rising endlessly into the windblown sky, our lord's reign will run on for years beyond all counting.
