Okure ite waga koioreba shirakumo no tanabiku yama o kyō ya koyuramu
Left behind, I sit longing for you; are you, I wonder, crossing today the mountains where the white clouds trail?

If only there were a wizard who could go back and forth to that shore beyond the clouds, like a far island in the sea, and carry our letters between us.
Ise no umi no ono no furue ni kuchihatede miyako no kata e kaere to zo omou
Do not rot away at the old inlet of Ono by the Sea of Ise; come back toward the capital, that is my wish.
Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Moroyori

Kinyo Wakashu - Minamoto no Kunizane
Akigiri no tachiwakarenuru kimi ni yori harenu omoi ni madoinuru kana
As the autumn mist rises, so you have risen and parted from me, and because of you I have lost my way in thoughts that, like the mist, will not clear.
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Mototoshi
Hito wa isa waga mi wa sue ni narinureba mata ōsaka o ikaga matsubeki
I cannot say how it is with you, but my own life is drawing to its end; how then could I wait for the day when we meet again at Ōsaka?
Koishisa wa sono hitokazu ni arazu tomo miyako o shinobu uchi ni irenamu
Even if I am not among the people you long for, when you long for the capital, please count me in.
Sashinoboru asahi ni kimi o omoiidemu katabuku tsuki ni ware o wasuru na
In the rising morning sun I will remember you; and you, when you see the sinking moon, do not forget me.
Kinyo Wakashu - Yushi Naishinno-ke no Koben
Ware hitori isogu to omoishi azumaji ni kakine no ume wa sakidachinikeri
On the eastern road where I thought I alone was hurrying, the plum by the hedge had already bloomed and gone on ahead of me.
Shirazaritsu sode nomi nurete ayamegusa kakaru koiji ni oimu mono to wa
I never knew it: with only my sleeves soaked through, like the iris that grows in the mud, I would come to take root on such a path of love.
Shinosusuki uwaba ni sugaku sasagani no ika sama ni seba hito nabikinamu
Like the spider spinning its web on the upper leaves of the slender pampas grass, how, I wonder, can I make her heart bend toward me?
Saritomo to omou kagiri wa shinobarete tori to tomo ni zo ne wa nakarekeru
As long as I could still hope that you would come after all, I held back my tears; but with the crowing of the dawn bird, I found myself weeping aloud.
