- Kinyo Wakashu
Nagamureba koishiki hito no koishiki ni kumoraba kumore aki no yo no tsuki
When I gaze at you, the one I love becomes ever dearer; so if you would cloud over, then cloud over, moon of the autumn night.
Tsurashi tomo oroka naru ni zo iwarekeru ika ni uramu to hito ni shirasemu
I could call it cruel only while my love was still shallow; how now can I let her know how deeply I resent her?
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Omokage wa kazu naranu mi ni koirarete kumoi no tsuki o tare to miruramu
Your image is loved by one of no account like me; with whom, I wonder, are you gazing at the moon above the clouds?
Asamashi ya nado kakitayuru moshiogusa sa koso wa ama no susabi naritomo
How shocking! Why have you stopped writing to me? Even if it was only an idle pastime, like a fisherman raking salt-seaweed.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Fumi somete omoikaerishi kurenai no fude no susabi o ikade misekemu
Having begun a letter, I thought better of it; why then did I let you see what my idle brush had written in crimson feeling?
Kinyo Wakashu - Hanazono no Sadaijin-ke no Kodaishin
Shiru rame ya yodo no tsugihashi yo to tomo ni tsurenaki hito o koiwataru to wa
Does she know, I wonder, that night after night, like one crossing the joined bridge at Yodo, I go on longing for one who is so cold?
Koiwabite osauru sode ya nagareizuru namida no kawa no iseki naruramu
Pining with love, I press my sleeve to my eyes; is it, I wonder, the weir that holds back the flowing river of my tears?
Nagarete no na ni zo tachinuru namidagawa hitome tsutsumi o sekishi aeneba
Like a flowing river of tears, my name has spread through the world, for the bank I built to hide from others' eyes could not hold the tears back.
Namidagawa sode no iseki mo kuchihatete yodomu kata naki koi mo suru kana
Even the weir my sleeve made against the river of tears has rotted away, and I am caught in a love that flows on with nowhere to pause.
Kaku to dani mada iwashiro no musubimatsu musubohoretaru waga kokoro kana
I have not yet said even this much of my love; like the knotted pine of Iwashiro, my heart is tied up and cannot come undone.
Koisu chō moji no sekimori iku tabi ka ware kakitsuramu kokorozukushi ni
How many times have I written out the letters that say I am in love, pouring out all my heart, like the barrier guard at Moji in far Tsukushi?
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Akisuke
Inochi dani hakanakarazu wa toshi fu tomo aimin koto o matamashi mono o
If only my life were not so fleeting, I would wait for the day we meet, however many years might pass.
Tsurakarishi kokoro narai ni aimite mo nao yume ka to zo utagawarekeru
So used has my heart grown to your coldness that even now that we have met, I cannot help doubting whether it is only a dream.
Omoi amari ikade morasamu onoyama no iwagaki komuru tani no shitamizu
My love brims over; how can I let it seep out, this love like the water flowing hidden in a valley walled in by the rocks of Ono's mountain?
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kinzane
Toshi furedo hito mo susabenu waga koi ya kuchiki no soma no tani no umoregi
Though years go by, she does not even take it up to pass the time; is this love of mine a log buried in the valley of the timber hills of Kuchiki, rotting away?
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Akisuke
Ika ni sen kazu naranu mi ni shitagawade tsutsumu sode yori amaru namida o
What am I to do with these tears that, heedless of my lowly station, overflow the very sleeve with which I hide them?
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
