Katsuragi ya kumo o kodakami yuki shiroshi aware to omou toshi no kure kana
Mount Katsuragi rises so high above the clouds that its snow gleams white—how deeply I feel the closing of the year!
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Oiraku no kashira no yuki o todomeokite hakana no toshi ya kurete yukuramu
Leaving the snow of white hair on my aging head, is the fleeting year now slipping away to its close?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Hakanakute koyoi akenaba yuku toshi no omoide mo naki haru ni ya awanamu
If this night should fade away and dawn, must I meet the spring with no memories at all of the departing year?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Nubatama no kono yo na ake so shibashiba mo mada furutoshi no uchi zo omowamu
O night, do not dawn yet! For a little while longer, let me think it is still within the old year.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Chibusa suu mada itokenaki midorigo no tomo ni nakinuru toshi no kure kana
Even the little infant, still so young it nurses at the breast, cries along with me—such is the close of the year.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Yuku toshi no yukue o toeba yo no naka no hito koso hitotsu moukuberanare
When I ask where the departing year has gone, it seems that each person in the world receives it, one year apiece.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Haru fukami mine no arashi ni chiru hana no sadame naki yo ni koizuma zo suru
Spring has grown deep, and like the blossoms scattered by the storm on the peak, on this uncertain night I long for the one I love.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Omoi nomi fukaki miyama no hototogisu hito koso shirane ne o nomi zo naku
Like the cuckoo in the deep mountains, my longing alone runs deep; though no one knows it, I do nothing but weep aloud.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ojika fusu natsuno no kusa no tsuyu yori mo shiraji na shigeki omoi ari to wa
She will not know, I think, that I hold a longing thicker even than the dew on the grasses of the summer fields where the stag lies down.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Waga koi wa miyama no matsu ni hau kuzu no shigeki o hito no towazu zo arikeru
My love is like the arrowroot vines that cling to the pines of the deep mountains, so thick and unceasing, and yet the one I love never comes to ask after me.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Yama shigemi ko no shitagakure yuku mizu no oto kikishi yori ware ya wasururu
Like the water flowing hidden beneath the trees of the thickly wooded mountain, I have heard of you only by report; and ever since I heard, how could I forget?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Natsu fukaki mori no utsusemi onore nomi munashiki koi ni mi o kudakuramu
Like an empty cicada shell in the forest deep in summer, am I alone breaking myself to pieces over a love that comes to nothing?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Waga yado no mase no hatate ni hau uri no nari mo narazu mo futari nenamashi
Like the melon vine creeping at the end of the hedge by my house, whether it bears fruit or not, whether our love is fulfilled or not, I would have the two of us sleep together.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kogakurete mono o omoeba utsusemi no ha ni oku tsuyu no kie ya kaeramu
Hidden among the trees and lost in longing, shall I not vanish away like the dew that settles on a cicada's wings?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kasasagi no ha ni oku tsuyu no marukibashi fumimiru saki ni kie ya wataramu
Like dew on the magpies' wings is this log bridge; before I ever set foot upon it, shall I go on vanishing away?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Sayo fukete kari no tsubasa ni oku shimo no kiete mo mono wa omou kagiri o
Like the frost that settles on the wings of the wild geese as night deepens, though I may vanish, my longing has no end.
